ISLAMABAD: A recent Gallup Pakistan survey shows that 40% of Pakistanis support second marriages, while 60% oppose them.
Supporters generally believe that a second marriage is acceptable if the individual has the financial means.
The survey found that men are more supportive than women, with 50% of men and 30% of women in favor. However, 72% of respondents said treating both wives fairly after a second marriage is difficult or impossible, including 59% of men who held this view.
When asked under what circumstances a second marriage should be allowed, 39% said it is acceptable if there are no children, 15% cited the ability to treat both wives fairly, and 10% said the first wife’s permission should be required.
The survey highlights the divided opinions in Pakistani society regarding second marriages and the challenges of ensuring fairness and harmony between spouses.
