DHAKA: In the national referendum held alongside Bangladesh’s general elections, 67% of voters supported reforms.
The referendum, which was part of the 13th national parliamentary elections, is currently undergoing vote counting after the polling process concluded.
These elections are being conducted after Sheikh Hasina, who has served multiple terms as Prime Minister, was ousted through a public movement, and a caretaker government led by Mohammad Yunus was formed.
These elections follow a student-led movement that lasted 18 months, resulting in the end of two decades of Hasina’s rule. Alongside the general elections, a national referendum was held to seek public approval for deep systemic reforms in Bangladesh’s political structure, with the potential for far-reaching consequences.
