Report states that 149 people have been injured in rain-related incidents between June 26 and July 9.

ISLAMABAD: Monsoon rains continue to lash several cities across Pakistan, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), heavy rains and flooding between June 26 and July 9 have claimed 87 lives, including 42 children, 29 men and 16 women.

The NDMA report also states that 149 people have been injured in rain-related incidents, among them 61 children, 52 men, and 36 women. Floodwaters and heavy rains have damaged around seven kilometers of roads and three bridges. Additionally, 171 houses have suffered partial damage while 71 houses have been completely destroyed.

Reports indicate that 106 livestock have also perished due to the flooding. The NDMA has issued alerts in anticipation of further potential risks. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast more heavy rainfall over the next two days, warning of possible flash floods in rivers and streams and landslides in mountainous areas. Urban areas have been placed on alert due to the threat of urban flooding.

Local authorities are coordinating rescue and relief operations in the worst-affected regions. Emergency teams have been dispatched to provide food, medical aid, and temporary shelter to displaced families. The government has urged citizens to follow safety advisories and avoid traveling through flood-prone areas during heavy rainfall.

Experts have warned that climate change is likely contributing to the increased severity and unpredictability of monsoon weather patterns. They stress the need for better infrastructure, improved early warning systems, and stronger disaster preparedness to minimize future losses and protect vulnerable communities.
