Maryam decides to take journalists on board over defamation bill

Opposition members in assembly and journalist bodies have rejected defamation bill 2024.

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif decided to take journalist bodies into confidence after an outcry over the government’s draft defamation law.

Minister for Information Azma Zahid Bukhari said that the basic aim of the Punjab Defamation Bill 2024 was to eliminate fake news. After opposition to the draft by the journalist bodies, the chief minister decided to meet their representatives at the assembly on Monday.

The Joint Action Committee of journalists has already rejected the bill and termed it a bid to gag the freedom of expression.

The committee said that it would oppose the bill and asked members of the assembly to reject it.
