ISLAMABAD: On the 26th anniversary of Pakistan’s historic decision to go nuclear as a tit for tat against India, a public holiday has been announced in the country by the federal government of the PML-N.
It was during the tenure of the PML-N with Nawaz Sharif as the prime minister when Pakistan detonated the atom bombs on May 28, 1998.
In his message today, acting president and the prime minister minister congratulated the nation on the observance of the 26th anniversary of Youm-e-Takbeer.
Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani reiterated the resolve to continue working towards a peaceful and stable world.
He said we successfully demonstrated our nuclear capabilities and joined the ranks of nuclear powers.
He said Pakistan, as a responsible nuclear state, believes in the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the day symbolizes the collective effort of all facets of national power.
He paid tribute to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto for initiating Pakistan’s nuclear program and Nawaz Sharif for taking the decision to carry out the explosions despite world pressure.
“The entire nation vowed for the integrity of this country that no compromise will be made by accepting any kind of external pressure on country’s defense,” he stated on X.
“Youm-e-Takbeer is a day to pay tribute to the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the Pakistan army’s initiative to make country’s defense impregnable.”
The prime minister also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and scientists for their role in initiating and continuing Pakistan’s nuclear programme.
Meanwhile, traders in different cities expressed surprise over the government sudden decision to declare public holiday today and announced to keep markets open.
