Lawyers announce long march against 26th amendment

Convention at Lahore also expresses support to journalists against recent changes to PECA.

LAHORE: At a convention held in Lahore, lawyers announced a protest long march to Islamabad on February 10 against the 26th constitutional amendment.

A declaration was issued at the All Pakistan Lawyers Convention under the Lahore High Court Bar Association. The declaration called for the immediate cancellation of the meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council, the formation of a full court on petitions against the 26th Amendment and the hearing on the petitions against the amendment to be broadcast live.

Moreover, new appointments in the judiciary should not be made until a decision on the petitions against the 26th Amendment is made. The senior judge of Islamabad High Court should be made its Chief Justice.

The lawyers convention meanwhile condemned the recently passed amendment to PECA.

President of Lahore High Court Bar Asad Manzoor Butt said that he fully supports the struggle of the journalists against the changes aimed at muzzling the press.

Addressing the convention, lawyer leader Hamid Khan said that the movement of lawyers was going to start and will sweep away the 26th Amendment. He said changes to PECA had been made to end stifle freedom of expression, adding that  lawyers are with journalists at every forum against the changes.
