WASHINGTON: US Secret Service officers shot and wounded a gunman near the White House on Saturday-Sunday night.
A Secret Service spokesman said the injured person had been transferred to hospital, but did not provide information about his condition. The spokesman also did not specify whether the target of the gunman was the White House or President Donald Trump.
President Trump was not in the White House at the time.
According to a statement released by a Secret Service spokesperson on the social media platform X, no Secret Service personnel were harmed in the incident.
The statement said local police notified the Secret Service of a suicidal person who was traveling from Indiana to Washington, and around midnight officers found the man’s vehicle parked very close to the White House.
The Secret Service statement said that when the officers moved towards him, he suddenly pulled out a weapon, after which there was an exchange of fire and the Secret Service personnel opened fire on the gunman.
The suspect has been transported to the hospital with injuries and information on his current condition is not available. Washington police are investigating the incident.
