SRINAGAR: The assembly of Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir became a fish market after pandemonium and uproar when the speaker refused to allow a debate on the controversial Waqf Amendment Act passed in India.
Members of the National Conference, PDP, and Congress present in the assembly raised strong slogans against the Act and tore up copies of it, after which the session was adjourned.
A motion was presented in the occupied Kashmir Assembly to allow a debate on the controversial Waqf Amendment Act brought by Modi government in the Indian parliament, but Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather rejected it.
Former Chief Minister of occupied Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti and Kashmiri leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq strongly condemned the Speaker’s decision.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said it is extremely absurd that in Tamil Nadu—a state where Muslims make up only 6% of the population—the assembly passed a motion opposing the controversial Waqf Amendment Act, while in a Muslim-majority assembly, the Speaker rejected the motion.
Last week, the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution against the controversial Waqf Amendment Bill.
It is worth mentioning that the controversial amendments in the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 include appointing a non-Muslim as the Chief Executive Officer of the Waqf Board, requiring state governments to include at least two non-Muslim members in their Waqf Boards, and giving district collectors the authority to decide on disputed properties.
Both houses of the Indian Parliament have passed this controversial bill, and with the approval of the Indian President, it has now become law.
