LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued an update on the flood situation in the province, warning residents to remain cautious as monsoon rains continue.
According to the PDMA, water levels in most major rivers remain normal, including the Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej. However, low-level flooding has been reported in the Indus River at Kalabagh and Chashma.
The water flow at Kalabagh stands at around 302,000 cusecs, while Chashma is recording approximately 276,000 cusecs. Medium-level flooding has also been reported at Wazirabad’s Nullah Palkhu, where the flow has reached 2,600 cusecs. Low-level flooding is being observed at Narowal’s Nullah Basantar, with a flow of around 1,700 cusecs.
PDMA officials said the fourth spell of monsoon rains is expected to continue until August 5. Further increases in water levels in eastern rivers and adjoining streams are possible due to expected rainfall in upper catchment areas.
PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa warned of a risk of urban flooding in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Multan, while landslides remain a concern in Murree, Galiyat and other hilly areas.
Residents living in riverbeds have been advised to move to safer locations. The Punjab government has also established flood relief camps in affected areas, where essential facilities and medicines will be provided.
The PDMA urged citizens to avoid recreational activities near rivers, canals and streams and asked parents to keep children away from waterways amid the ongoing flood threat.
