A tribute to Ghizer’s first Shaheed of Liberation War
By Khesraw Hayat Kakakhail
The Liberation War of Gilgit in 1948 was a pivotal conflict fought between India and Pakistan over the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir, including present-day Gilgit-Baltistan.
This war marked the first of four Indo-Pakistani wars that would be fought between the two newly independent nations. Pakistan initiated the conflict just weeks after gaining independence by deploying its Gilgit Scouts and tribal lashkar (militias) from Waziristan, aiming to capture Kashmir and prevent its ruler from joining India.
In this war, Number-1683 Havaldar Sardar Shaheed, the first cousin of Baba-e-Ghizer Niat Qabool Hayat, demonstrated extraordinary bravery and made the ultimate sacrifice. Unfortunately, his body was never recovered from Indian territory.
According to accounts, he valiantly fought and killed hundreds of Dogra soldiers before succumbing to his injuries, giving his life for his beloved motherland. His selfless act of courage and devotion to his country has become a legendary tale, inspiring countless individuals in Gilgit-Baltistan and beyond.
Havaldar Sardar Shaheed has the esteemed honor of being recognized as Ghizer’s Fisrt Shaheed of War of 1948, as inscribed on the Yaadgar-e-Shuhada (Martyrs’ Monument) at Chinar Bagh Gilgit. This monument stands as a poignant tribute to the sacrifices made by brave soldiers like Havaldar Sardar Shaheed, who laid down their lives for the freedom and sovereignty of their nation.
His rich history continues to be celebrated and remembered, serving as a powerful symbol of patriotism and courage in the face of adversity. The people of Ghizer and Gilgit-Baltistan as a whole take great pride in the heroic Shahadat of Havaldar Sardar Shaheed, and his memory will forever be etched in the annals of history.
