Accountability court suspends arrest warrants of Nawaz Sharif

If Sharif fails to appear before court, warrants will automatically restore on October 24, says court order.

ISLAMABAD: An accountability court in Islamabad on Thursday suspended the warrants issued for the arrest of former prime minister and PML-N supremo leader Nawaz Sharif in the Toshakhana case.

The suspension of the arrest warrants comes two days before the expected return of Mr Sharif from abroad on October 21. When judge Muhammad Bashir took up the application of the PML-N chief, his counsel Qazi Misbah appeared in the court.

The counsel said that the application had been filed yesterday as Mr Sharif was ready to appear in the court after his return on October 21.

On the contention of the lawyer, the judge summoned records of the case. The judge asked the counsel if any application had been filed in the high court.

In reply, the counsel said no petition has been filed in the high court in connection with the case as there was no judgement rather arrest warrants had been issued in the Toshakhana case.

NAB prosecutors said if Mr Sharif wants to appear in the court, the arrest warrants can be suspended till October 24.

The judge then reserved his judgement and later announced it, saying that the warrants were being suspended. He said if Mr Sharif failed to appear in the court by October 24, the arrest warrants would automatically restore.

Lawyer Azam Nazeer Tarar told reporters that Sharif had been granted protective bail under which authorities could not arrest him until he himself appears before a court on Oct 24, adding Sharif would address a rally in Lahore upon his return.
