Accused in Sikh leader’s murder case indicted in Canada

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, 45, was shot dead in June, 2023, outside a Sikh temple in Surrey.

ONTARIO: A man arrested in the murder case of an Indian Sikh separatist leader last year has been inducted by a Canadian court here.

The accused, Amandeep Singh, was arrested in the murder case in November 2023. He is the fourth accused arrested in the case.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said that 22-year-old Amandeep Singh was already in the custody of Peel Regional Police in Ontario for unrelated firearms charges.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, 45, was shot dead in June, 2023, outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb with a large Sikh population. A few months later, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau cited evidence of Indian government involvement, prompting a diplomatic crisis with New Delhi.
Three other men identified as as Karanpreet Singh, 28, Kamalpreet Singh, 22 and Karan Brar, 22, were named as suspects in the murder.
Nijjar was a Canadian citizen campaigning for the creation of Khalistan, an independent Sikh homeland carved out of India.
The presence of Sikh separatist groups in Canada has long frustrated New Delhi, which had labeled Nijjar a “terrorist”.
