Afghan Taliban demanded Rs10 bn from Pakistan: Asif

Says money was demanded to settle TTP men in Afghanistan but on question of guarantee Taliban were non-committal.

ISLAMABAD: Defense Minister and PML-N stalwart Khawaja Muhammad Asif has stated that the Taliban regime in Kabul had demanded Rs10 billion from Pakistan in return for settling TTP terrorists in Afghanistan.

In a program on Geo TV, he said during the PDM government he had visited Afghanistan during which the Taliban government authorities asked for the money. He said that when he asked them for guarantee that the TTP men would not return to Pakistan the Taliban government was non-committal.

The minister said that the main reason behind terror cases in Pakistan was those who were brought back and settled in Pakistan (during the government of Imran Khan). He said that during the PTI government lawmakers in National Assembly were told in an in-camera meeting that the decision to settle them was in the interest of Pakistan.

The PTI founder and then prime minister was of the view that under the move about 40 to 45 thousand people would come. These people are now sitting in Khyber Pakthunkhwa and killing people, the minister said.

It may be mentioned here that Pakistan has repeatedly stated that terrorists hiding in Afghanistan were carrying out terror attacks inside Pakistan. As Kabul failed to take action, Pakistan’s military conducted aerial attacks on terror camps in Afghan provinces along Pakistan in which the Kabul regime claimed death of civilians.
