UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations has issued a warning regarding the extremist policies of the Afghan Taliban regime, their support for terrorists and violations of women’s rights, highlighting risks to both regional and global security.
During a briefing to the UN Security Council, Georgette Gagnon, Deputy Representative of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), stated that ongoing terrorism threats and human rights abuses in Afghanistan continue to concern the international community.
She emphasized that the Taliban must take serious and effective action against terrorism flourishing within Afghanistan. Neighboring countries are reportedly worried about the presence of active terrorist organizations operating from Afghan soil.
“The potential threat of terrorism originating from Afghanistan has become a major challenge for the global community. The Taliban’s diplomatic isolation could further exacerbate regional instability, terrorism, and the drug trade,” Gagnon added.
She also warned that the Taliban’s ideologically and gender-biased laws have put the future of Afghan citizens, particularly women, at risk.
According to her, the regime’s so-called criminal laws have stripped Afghan citizens of equal opportunities and fundamental human rights.
