ISLAMABAD: Several Chinese companies have expressed serious interest in launching satellite-based internet services in Pakistan, following the path paved by American tech giant Starlink.
This move signals increasing global interest in Pakistan’s growing digital infrastructure needs, especially in remote and underserved regions where traditional broadband access remains limited.
According to well-placed sources, the Government of Pakistan has directed relevant institutions to swiftly finalize the framework of rules, regulations, and licensing requirements to facilitate the entry of these global players into the local market.
The objective is to encourage competition, improve internet accessibility, and ensure that the country is technologically prepared for the future of connectivity.
The Space Activity Regulatory Board (SARB) has already circulated a detailed consultant report to concerned departments for evaluation. This report outlines key technical, legal, and operational recommendations aimed at managing satellite internet operations efficiently and securely.
Based on this, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will review the consultant’s guidelines and take the lead in drafting a comprehensive regulatory structure.
One of the significant aspects under consideration is enabling direct satellite-to-mobile connectivity, which would allow smartphones to access internet and communication services directly via satellite without relying on ground-based infrastructure.
This feature could prove to be a game-changer in disaster-prone or geographically challenging regions of Pakistan, where connectivity is often disrupted.
Once the rules and mechanisms are finalized and approved, the formal process for company registration and service rollout will begin. The entry of multiple international satellite service providers is expected to lower costs, boost innovation, and help bridge Pakistan’s digital divide.
