AJK president ridicules Indian objection to British envoy’s visit

Says New Delhi held meetings of G20 countries in occupied Kashmir last year.

MUZAFFARABAD: President Azad Kashmir Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry on Tuesday said the objection of Indian government to the recent visit of British High Commissioner Jane Marriott to Azad Kashmir’s Mirpur area was not only on irrelevant but also ridiculous to say the least.

In a statement, Chaudhry said ambassadors abd high commissioners of different countries had in the past also visited Azad Kashmir.

If New Delhi had any objections to such visit, why it hosted a meeting of G20 countries in Kashmir currently under the illegal occupation of India last year, he asked.

The Modi regime in India on Saturday took exception to the visit by British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott’s visit to Azad Kashmir.

A spokesman in New Delhi claimed that the visit of the high commissioner to Pakistan was an infringement on India’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

India says Pakistan has illegally occupied Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan which under the accession agreement with the Dogra rulers of Kashmir belongs to India along with the Kashmir currently in Indian occupation.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs said Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra lodged a “strong protest” with the British High Commissioner to India about the visit, the ministry said, terming the visit “unacceptable”.

The Foreign Office in the UK confirmed that Marriott visited Murpur in Azad Kashmir and met British diaspora there. She also played football with children besides visiting a bakery in the area.
