ISLAMABAD: The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) has issued a weather advisory for the upcoming week, warning of heavy rainfall and potential flooding in various parts of Pakistan between August 5 and 10.
According to a report released by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), upper and central regions of the country are expected to receive widespread heavy rains, which could lead to flood-like conditions in several areas.
There is a moderate to high risk of flooding in the River Chenab at Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad. Similarly, the upper catchments of the River Jhelum near Mangla may experience moderate to high flood levels. The River Kabul is expected to see increased water flow near Nowshera, while streams in the Swat and Panjkora regions may face flash flooding and torrential flow.
Medium-level flow is anticipated at major barrages including Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma, Taunsa, and Guddu. In Gilgit-Baltistan, rising water levels are expected in the Hunza and Shigar rivers. There is also a risk of flash floods in mountain streams such as Hisper, Khunjerab, Shimshal, Braldo, Hushe, and Saltoro. In Balochistan, flash flooding is likely in streams across the districts of Musakhel, Sherani, Zhob, and Sibi.
From August 4 to 7, scattered downpours and thunderstorms are forecast across various regions, which may further raise water levels in rivers and streams.
Currently, the Tarbela Dam is at 90 percent of its capacity, while the Mangla Dam is approximately 60 percent full due to increased monsoon inflow.
Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, stay updated through official weather bulletins, avoid travel near rivers or flood-prone areas during the warning period, and comply with any evacuation or safety instructions issued by local disaster management teams.
The NDMA and provincial authorities remain on high alert and are closely monitoring the evolving weather conditions to ensure a swift and coordinated response where necessary.
