KARACHI: TheĀ American woman who reached Karachi after falling in love with a Pakistani boy through social media and was ditched and refused to go back returned to the United States after four months.
Onija Andrew Robinson boarded on a foreign airline flight EK 603, which departed for Dubai en route to the US.
Robinson, a resident of New York, came to Karachi on a one-month tourist visa in October 2024 to marry the Pakistani boy living in Karachi. After expiry of her visa, she was supposed to leave Karachi by November 10, but she remained in Karachi saying she would not return unless marrying her lover.
According to the police, on the intervention of Governor of Sindh, an exit permit was issued for 15 days on January 27 and a welfare organization had arranged for the woman’s return air ticket to the United States. Officials tried to send back the woman to the United States on January 29, but after going through all the steps at the airport, she suddenly refused to board a plane.
Later, the woman boarded a taxi from the airport and reached outside the alleged friend’s house in the Garden area and stayed there for several days. Then a welfare organization gave her shelter, during which the woman was admitted to special ward of Jinnah Hospital a few days ago where she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
After several days of treatment at Jinnah Hospital, she was declared fit for travel by a five-member medical board and discharged on Friday evening.
The woman was then sent to the airport from the hospital under police custody with regular OPD medicines. Earlier, staffers of the US Consulate had persuaded the woman to return home during her visit to the hospital. They also arranged a ticket for her.
