PESHAWAR: Following the Rs40 billion Kohistan scandal, yet another massive financial irregularity has surfaced in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, raising serious concerns about public fund mismanagement.
A new report has revealed that from 2016 to April 2025, the Accountant General offices across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa made excess payments amounting to Rs16.54 billion from the Public Works Head G10113 in 29 districts.
The Controller General of Accounts (CGA) has ordered an immediate inquiry, noting that this could become the largest financial scandal in the province’s history, with the total suspected amount now reaching a staggering Rs56.5 billion.
According to an official letter sent to the Accountant General Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the irregularities were detected through a detailed system-based financial review. The review found that from 2016 to April 2025, Rs163.13 billion was disbursed under head G10113, while only Rs146.59 billion was credited to the account—resulting in excess payments of Rs16.54 billion across 29 districts.
The CGA has directed the Accountant General to complete the inquiry within 20 days and submit a comprehensive report.
Sources told this correspondent that authorities have instructed the formation of a special committee to investigate how these excess payments occurred, identify those responsible, and determine how the funds can be recovered.
The initial findings have exposed clear irregularities in the financial operations of all 29 district offices, with some districts showing discrepancies in the hundreds of millions, and others involving billions of rupees in unauthorized disbursements.
This alarming development raises critical questions about internal controls, oversight mechanisms, and accountability in the province’s financial management systems.
