Another resolution in Senate seeks delay to Feb 8 elections

Independent member of house says increase in terror activities has created sense of insecurity in country.

ISLAMABAD: Over a week after a resolution landed in the Senate and was passed by the house with just 14 members in attendance seeking a delay to the Feb 8 election, another move has been introduced for the same purpose.

It is strange some members of the upper house of parliament are hell bent to get the already delayed elections postponed even though the house has no role in holding the elections.

independent Senator Hidayatullah in his resolution filed in the Senate sought to delay the polls due to the increase in terrorism activities and armed attacks on security forces in North Waziristan, Bajaur and Turbat.

The resolution said that incidents had created a sense of insecurity in the whole country making it hard to hold the polls.

It may be recalled that a day after the Senate passed the first resolution calling for the delay in the Feb 8 elections on January 6, another resolution was filed in the house calling for timely elections in the country.

The resolution was submitted to the Senate Secretariat by Jamaat Islami Senator Mushtaq Ahmed. However, it’s not clear when the house will take it up as the session of the Senate has been prorogued.

This resolution stated that the elections had already been delayed and further delay would be detrimental to the democratic process in the country.

The resolution by the JI senator was filed a day after 14 members of the Senate managed to pass a resolution calling for the delay in the Feb 8 elections due to security concerns and cold weather in the country.

The resolution was passed even though the house lacked quorum. The passage of the resolution was severely criticized by political parties and others.

They said though the Senate gad no say in the holding of elections, as a democratic institution it should not back such a resolution.
