Pakistan, Portugal Move Closer to Launching Direct Flights

ISLAMABAD: A significant development has emerged regarding the launch of direct flights between Pakistan and Portugal, a move expected to benefit over 50,000 Pakistanis residing in Portugal.

According to details, progress is being made to strengthen air connectivity and enhance economic cooperation between the two countries. In this regard, a meeting was held between Prime Minister’s Youth Programme focal person Shahryar Memon and the Portuguese Ambassador, where both sides discussed the early initiation of direct flights.

During the meeting, the Portuguese envoy expressed optimism about the swift launch of direct air links, highlighting that the facility would greatly ease travel for the Pakistani diaspora in Portugal.

Shahryar Memon stated that direct flights would not only facilitate overseas Pakistanis but also provide convenience to passengers traveling to Europe.

The ambassador emphasized that direct connectivity would play a key role in boosting trade, tourism, and investment between the two nations. Both sides also acknowledged that the current trade volume does not reflect the true potential and stressed the need for greater private sector involvement.

Discussions further focused on enhancing cooperation in key sectors including IT, renewable energy, textiles, and agriculture, which could help Pakistani businesses gain improved access to European markets.

The Portuguese ambassador also appreciated the positive contribution of the Pakistani community to Portugal’s economy and expressed willingness to collaborate in the tourism sector. He further indicated that Portugal’s foreign minister is expected to visit Pakistan after the summer season.
