Army chief ready to punish officials involved in smuggling: Bugti

I cannot say there is no smuggling as smuggled items are transported via trucks, not camels, says minister.

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff Gen Syed Asim Munir has made it clear that any official or officer of the army found involved in smuggling will be court martialed and put behind bars.

Bugti said he was sure that security forces were involved in smuggling activities. “If I say security forces are not involved in smuggling, it won’t be right as smuggled items are transported via trucks, not camels, he said.

The minister said that Gen Asim Munir had warned military personnel that involvement in illegal cross-border trade would lead to court martial and imprisonment of those found involved. He said the army had its accountability mechanism which was evident following the May 9 incidents in the country.

He said there were suspicions that along with army officials there were also some politicians who were involved in cross-border smuggling. He said the names of all those involved in the illegal activity would be made public after holding an inquiry.

Bugti also said that for the last about one month, the government had been working to check smuggling and stop other illegal businesses such as sale of adulterated fuel and less measurement by filling station owners.

In reply to a question, the caretaker minister said Nawaz Sharif upon return would be dealt in accordance with the law. If he wants to return and take part in democratic process, it would be encouraging, he added.
