Army warns against violence in name of political activity

Commanders say army personnel will perform assigned duties as per constitutional mandate under the guidelines of ECP.

RAWALPINDI: The 262nd corps commanders’ conference held in Rawalpindi with Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir in the chair on Wednesday discussed the overall security situation and ongoing operations against terrorists in the country.

The commanders also discussed deployment of the army to assist the Election Commission of Pakistan in holding general elections on February 8. The army personnel will perform assigned duties as per the constitutional mandate under the guidelines of ECP.

“No one would be allowed to indulge in violence in the name of political activity and sabotage the quintessential democratic exercise of conduct of free and fair elections,” the conference participants said.

The commanders appreciated steps taken against illegal activities and mafias including smuggling, hoarding, money laundering, power theft and aliens living in the country illegally.

The army chief asked the commanders to continue their focus on training, administration and morale of the soldiers.

According to the military’s media wing, the army chief told the conference that Pakistan believes in peaceful co-existence with all states but there would be no compromise on national sovereignty, honor and aspirations of the people of Pakistan.

The conference was briefed about extra-territorial and extra-judicial killings by Indian forces in occupied Kashmir.
