WASHINGTON: Astronauts of NASA’s Artemis II mission adopted an unusual yet symbolic way to prepare for their historic journey, organizing a “movie night” before their launch into space.

Reports indicate that the four-member crew watched the 2026 science fiction film Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, during their pre-launch quarantine period.

The film, which revolves around a biologist working with an alien life form to save Earth, resonated with the theme of space exploration and survival beyond our planet.

Artemis II astronauts launched on April 1 and achieved a milestone on April 6 by becoming the farthest humans have traveled from Earth. During a television interview on April 4, Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen shared that watching the film with his crewmates helped them relax and mentally prepare during quarantine.

He described the experience as meaningful, noting that it gave them an opportunity to spend time together ahead of the mission. Jeremy Hansen also praised Ryan Gosling’s performance, remarking that art and science often reflect each other and highlighting the film’s strong portrayal.

The unique pre-launch activity added a memorable touch to an already historic mission, as the astronauts connected their real-life journey with a cinematic depiction of humanity’s challenges in space.
