RAWALPINDI: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi has issued non-bailable arrest warrants for 14 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Omar Ayub Khan and Shibli Faraz, in connection with the May 9, 2023, attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.
The court’s decision follows the defendants’ repeated failure to appear in court, leading to the issuance of arrest warrants. The accused are charged with inciting and participating in violent protests that targeted military installations, including the GHQ, after the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan.
The May 9 protests resulted in widespread unrest, with demonstrators attacking military and government buildings. In response, the government initiated legal proceedings against PTI leaders and supporters, leading to convictions and sentences.
The PTI has denounced the court’s actions, describing the charges as politically motivated. The party plans to challenge the verdicts and has called for protests to demand the release of its leaders.
Legal proceedings continue as the court has directed the police to arrest the accused and present them in court by the specified date.
