KARACHI: The 18th death anniversary of former prime minister and PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto is being observed on Saturday (today).
In his message, President Asif Ali Zardari said Benazir Bhutto was the first woman to serve as the prime minister of a Muslim-majority country, and she was elected by the people twice to the top post. In a political environment where democracy was often undermined, military regimes prevailed and women faced even greater challenges, she fought fiercely for the rights of the constitution, parliament and vote of the people. Her repeated electoral victories stand as a testament to her unwavering belief in peaceful politics and democracy.
Benazir Bhutto spoke for those who had no voice in society – farmers, workers, and the underprivileged. They felt a strong connection to her, and they were at the center of her political focus. She dedicated herself to public welfare, particularly working to create job opportunities, access to education, basic amenities, and avenues for social development for the youth.
In the 1990s, she took significant steps to improve the economy, attract investment, and promote modern media. These efforts paved the way for better connectivity and economic opportunities in the years to come. Her bold stance against extremism remains one of her most memorable contributions. She openly spoke out against violence and hatred, and paid the ultimate price for her beliefs. Her martyrdom teaches us that the fight against terrorism is not just about power but also about ideas, education, and mutual respect.
She faced pressure and restrictions with courage, proving that the truth can never be permanently suppressed. On her 18th death anniversary, we must choose the path of unity instead of division. Benazir Bhutto believed in the politics of democracy, not revenge. She consistently reminded us that the true vengeance lies in strengthening democracy. Her message brings us together, urging us to strengthen democratic institutions and work together for the development of our country.
“On this occasion, I reaffirm our commitment to advancing her vision for a democratic, inclusive, diverse, and prosperous Pakistan. May Allah grant us the wisdom to continue drawing guidance from her sacrifices.”
