DHAKA: The alliance led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured a two-thirds majority in the general elections in Bangladesh, according to unofficial reports on Friday morning.

According to the unofficial results, the party led by Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and the alliance’s candidate for prime minister, has won 151 seats. The BNP-led alliance reportedly secured 209 out of 299 seats in total. Tarique Rahman was declared successful from both Dhaka and Bogra constituencies.

Reports further state that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has won 34 seats so far, while the Gen-Z-backed National Citizen Party, which fielded candidates on 30 seats, managed to secure 5 seats.

Tarique Rahman said that maintaining law and order would be his top priority so that citizens feel safe. He added that women make up half of the country’s population and pledged special attention toward their welfare.

He also urged party supporters and workers to offer special prayers during Friday prayers and to refrain from holding rallies or celebratory gatherings.

Meanwhile, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus stated that citizens actively exercised their constitutional right to vote. Alongside the national elections, a national referendum was also held in Bangladesh.

According to results from Dhaka, 73 percent of voters supported the proposed reforms. In the referendum, voters were asked to choose between “Yes” or “No.” The outcome is expected to determine the country’s future political and constitutional structure.

The referendum sought approval for extensive constitutional reforms proposed under the July National Charter.
