NEW DELHI: Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s popular reality show Bigg Boss 19 has landed in fresh legal trouble after copyright licensing firm Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) issued a legal notice demanding damages worth ₹2 crore.

According to the company, the producers of Bigg Boss 19 allegedly used several Bollywood songs, including “Chikni Chameli” and “Dhatt Teri Ki”, without obtaining the required public performance license. The notice, dated September 19, has been served to Endemol Shine India along with directors Thomas Gossiet, Nicolas Chazarin, and Deepak Dhar.

The legal setback comes at a time when the show is enjoying peak popularity, featuring well-known contestants such as Ashnoor Kaur, Zeishan Quadri, Tanya Mittal, and Awez Darbar. PPL has demanded not only the licensing fees but also ₹2 crore in damages for the alleged infringement.

Industry experts suggest that this case could spark a larger debate in the Indian entertainment industry about compliance with copyright laws, serving as a cautionary tale for other television productions to secure all necessary licenses before using music.

Hosted by Salman Khan, Bigg Boss is currently in its 19th season and remains one of India’s most popular reality shows. It remains to be seen how the producers will tackle this legal challenge and whether it could impact the show’s ongoing schedule.
