Review by Ruba Amaan

Stephen R. Covey’s book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is one of the most influential self-development books. This book is structured around seven powerful habits that transform an individual from dependence to independence, and finally to interdependence.

This book also teaches us how to become successful and balanced in life by following the seven habits mentioned in the book. He also tried to explain that real success comes from building good character, managing ourselves, working well with others, and having positive thoughts. As James Allen said in his book As a Man Thinketh that “our thoughts shape our character, actions, and destiny.”

The powerful seven habits are as follows:

1) Be Proactive

Covey said that you are the programmer of your life. Take responsibility for your actions, choices, and attitude. Blaming someone else or blaming circumstances is not a good thing; instead, try to focus on what you can control. Covey explains that proactive people do not wait for things to happen; they take action. They do not waste time thinking about things they cannot control. They focus on what they can influence: managing their time effectively and keeping a positive attitude.

2) Begin with the End in Mind

This habit is about envisioning what you want to achieve before you start working on it. Covey believed that by having a clear picture of your goals, you can align your actions to achieve them. Set goals based on values and long-term purpose. If you want to be remembered as an ideal person after your death, then for that you have to become a good, responsible, and ideal individual in your life and perform such actions which will be fruitful for you and also for others.

3) Put First Things First

Covey tried to explain that most people do secondary things instead of primary ones. We spend our time doing things which are not important for our self-development or improvement. So Covey said in his book that proactive people first prioritize things to know which one is most important and will be fruitful for them. Therefore, we should know the things which matter most and will be beneficial for us.

4) Win-Win Situation

Win/Win is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions. In his book, Covey emphasizes cooperating with others without expecting rewards from them. So, we should work together in every field of life and make decisions which will be beneficial for all. The most important thing in Win/Win is “trust.” Without trust in each other, we lack mutual learning and real creativity. By doing this, both sides feel valued. Win/Win is a belief in the third alternative. It’s not your way or my way; it’s a better way, a higher way.

5) Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood

In this habit, Covey emphasizes that before being understood, we should first understand others. According to the author, effective people listen first to understand, and only then do they share their own perspectives. In our daily life, everyone wants to impose their own thoughts on others, due to which conflicts occur. By following this habit, these conflicts can be shifted into collaboration.

6) Synergy

This habit is all about the power of teamwork. Covey explained that when individuals work collaboratively with each other, the result will be greater than what any individual could achieve alone. By following this habit, many complex problems or issues can be solved easily. Synergy is about recognizing that together we are stronger and more capable than we are individually.

7) Sharpen the Saw

Covey explains that just as a saw needs to be sharpened regularly to stay effective, in the same way we need to take care of ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

The book by Stephen R. Covey is one of the most influential books, focusing on seven habits that help us live a valuable and meaningful life in this short world. It also helps us become independent of others and circumstances so that we can grow and live our life in our own way.
