PESHAWAR: A by-election for the vacant general seat of the Senate from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is being held today, as announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
According to the ECP, polling will start at 9:00 AM and will continue without any break until 4:00 PM. The polling process is taking place inside the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly building, while Provincial Election Commissioner Saeed Gul has been appointed as the Returning Officer to supervise the proceedings.
Three candidates — Taj Muhammad Afridi, Khurram Zeeshan, and Irfan Saleem — are contesting for the Senate seat.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly currently comprises 145 members, and a candidate needs at least 73 votes to secure victory. The government benches hold 92 members, while the opposition has 53 members, giving the ruling coalition a clear numerical advantage.
This Senate seat became vacant following the disqualification of PTI leader Shibli Faraz. The by-election is considered politically significant, as its result may influence the balance of power in the Upper House of Parliament and could have broader implications for party alignments in the province.
