KARACHI: By-elections are currently underway in 14 districts of Sindh, including 28 local government seats in Karachi.
Voters are casting their ballots to elect 2 District Council members, 6 Chairpersons, 7 Vice-Chairpersons, and 13 General/Ward members.
In Karachi, the by-elections cover three districts—Kemari, West, and East—with a total of 54 candidates competing for five seats.
Several of these seats became vacant due to resignations or the deaths of officeholders, leading political parties to nominate relatives of the former officials. In Baldia Town, the UC Vice-Chairperson seat, vacated following the resignation of Asif Mosa, is being contested by his brother, who has been nominated by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
In Orangi Town, the UC Chairperson seat left vacant after the assassination of Amir Bhutto is being contested by his widow, Shahneela Amir. Similarly, in Sohrab Goth Town, the UC Vice-Chairperson seat vacated after the passing of Bashir Brohi is being contested by his son, Shehroz Brohi, representing the PPP.
Across Sindh, a total of 168 polling stations have been set up to facilitate voting, of which 128 are classified as highly sensitive, 34 as sensitive, and 6 as normal. Out of 67 local government seats scheduled for polling, 33 candidates were elected unopposed.
Two seats received no nominations, three nominations were rejected, and one candidate retired before the election process began.
