Committee told to submit report about masterminds, planners, and executors of arson attacks.

ISLAMABAD: A month to the February 8 general elections, the caretaker government has formed a cabinet committee to probe and identify those who were the masterminds, planners, and executors of arson attacks on May 9.

The cabinet division has also issued a notification about formation of the committee which is headed by caretaker minister for law Ahmad Irfan Aslam.

The five-member committee will look into the short and long-term impacts and ramifications of the arson attacks and come up with its recommendations.

The notification said the committee will “analyse the causes, and determine responsibility for these events and to evaluate their immediate and long-term implications”.

The committee will also “suggest preventive measures to ensure that such a breach of national security is not repeated.”

The arson attacks, especially in Punjab and Khyber Pakthunkhwa, took place soon after the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan in a corruption case by National Accountability Bureau on May 9.

The attackers targeted military installations, including the GHQ in Rawalpindi and the corps commander house in Lahore.

In connection with the violence, hundreds of PTI workers were arrested and about 100 of them are still in jails and facing terrorism charges.

Many PTI leaders condemned the violence and formed separate political parties such as Istihkam e Pakistan Party and PTI Parliamentarians while a number of others gave gone underground.
