CERN Reviews Pakistan’s Scientific Progress

ISLAMABAD: A delegation from the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) visited Pakistan from August 24 to 28 to assess the country’s progress in science and technology, the Foreign Office (FO) said on Friday.

CERN, one of the world’s leading scientific research centres, was founded in 1954 on the principle of “science for peace.” Pakistan became an associate member on July 31, 2015, with the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) leading the collaboration.

During the visit, five top CERN experts met with the PAEC chairman and toured several major institutions, including the National Centre for Physics, Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences, PINSTECH, INMOL, NILOP, Heavy Mechanical Complex-3, and other advanced research facilities.

The FO noted that the visit aimed to evaluate Pakistan’s contributions to CERN and its broader progress in scientific research and technological development. As an associate member, Pakistan has benefited from enhanced participation in CERN programmes, increased engineering contracts, and opportunities for industrial and human resource development.

A previous CERN task force visit in 2022 similarly reviewed Pakistan’s engagement. The FO added that the partnership has helped train a new generation of scientists and engineers while promoting knowledge exchange in key areas.
