BEIJING: China has strongly condemned the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by U.S. forces and has demanded their immediate release, calling the action a clear violation of international law.
A spokesman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday said the detention of President Maduro and his spouse breaches fundamental principles of international relations and has raised serious concerns in Beijing. The ministry urged the United States to ensure the personal safety of both detainees and to release them without delay.
China also warned Washington to halt any attempts to overthrow the Venezuelan government, stressing that all disputes should be resolved through dialogue and negotiations rather than military intervention.
The U.S. military forces conducted an operation in Venezuela, during which President Maduro and his wife were taken into custody and transferred out of the country. Beijing described the operation as a violation of international norms and a serious threat to peace and stability in the region.
The development has triggered widespread international concern, with several countries calling for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to address the escalating situation in Venezuela.
