US says no assessment on makeup of candidates in Pakistan
Spokesperson expresses hope that forthcoming elections in Pakistan will be free and fair.
WASHINGTON: The US State Department has once again stressed the importance of free and fair elections in Pakistan.
At a press briefing State Department spokesperson Vendant Patel said that it was for the people of Pakistan to choose their leader in the elections.
He said the US was hopeful that the next elections in Pakistan would be free and fair, benefiting the Pakistani people.
When asked about the potential exclusion of a prominent leader like Imran Khan due to his imprisonment, Patel, said they “did not have an assessment on the makeup of candidates or the representation of any specific political party.”
He said that such decisions are for the people of Pakistan to determine. Imran Khan was removed from power in April 2021 through a no confidence motion in the National Assembly.
He accused the US of conspiring his exit and cited a cipher sent by then Pakistani ambassador to the US in which content of the envoy with a senior US official was mentioned.
