Cipher case verdict Pakistan’s internal matter: US

Spokesman says US will always support a strong democratic system in the South Asian country.

WASHINGTON: The United States of America has said the verdict in the cipher case against former prime minister Imran Khan was an internal matter of Pakistan.

During a routine press briefing here, State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller was asked about the sentencing of Imran Khan to 10 years imprisonment. In reply, he said that he would not comment on the internal matter of any country.

He said US always wants a democratic system in Pakistan and other country in which the people have their say in the election of their representatives.

It may be mentioned here that Imran Khan had alleged that the cipher sent by then Pakistani ambassador to the US had exposed a US conspiracy to oust his government.

However, the US has repeatedly stated that it had nothing to do with the no-confidence move through which the National Assembly removed the PTT government.

The government later registered a case against the former prime minister Imran Khan and ex-foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi for making a secret document public and later misplacing it.

A special court on Tuesday sentenced Imran and Qureshi to 10 years’ imprisonment in the case. The verdict came hardly a week before the general elections scheduled to be held on February 8.
