GILGIT: A Pakistani mountaineer, Muhammad Iftikhar Hussain, died after being hit by an avalanche during an expedition on K2, the world’s second-highest peak.
According to Shigar Deputy Commissioner Arif Hussain, four climbers were caught in the avalanche. Three foreign climbers were rescued with minor injuries and have been shifted to a hospital for treatment.
Tragically, the Pakistani climber could not survive. He has been identified as Muhammad Iftikhar Hussain, a resident of Sadpara village. His body is being transported to Skardu today and will be laid to rest in his native village.
Deputy Commissioner Arif Hussain confirmed that the funeral will be held in Sadpara village later today.
Muhammad Iftikhar Hussain was part of a growing community of Pakistani mountaineers who have been making significant contributions to high-altitude climbing. Sadpara village, his hometown, has produced several renowned climbers, including the legendary Ali Sadpara, and is often referred to as the heart of Pakistan’s mountaineering talent.
This tragic incident highlights the extreme dangers associated with high-altitude expeditions, particularly on peaks like K2, known for its treacherous weather and difficult terrain. Despite advancements in equipment and logistics, climbers continue to face life-threatening challenges in their pursuit of summits.
