MUZAFFARABAD: A complete shutdown is being observed today across Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir on the call of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference.
The shutdown is being held in protest against India’s controversial Waqf Amendment Act and the granting of domicile rights to non-locals in the region.
In a statement, the Hurriyat Conference said that these moves by the Modi government are part of a conspiracy to erase the religious, social, and political identity of the Kashmiri people. The organization stated that the Waqf Amendment Act is not only an attack on the identity of Kashmiris but also on Indian Muslims.
Shops, markets, and educational institutions remained closed throughout the valley, and traffic was significantly less than usual. Protest demonstrations were held in various areas, where participants raised anti-India slogans and called for international intervention.
The Hurriyat Conference accused India of attempting to discredit the freedom movement through false flag operations and using underhanded tactics to suppress the legitimate struggle of the Kashmiri people.
In its statement, the Hurriyat called on the international community to take notice of India’s violations of UN resolutions and the Indus Waters Treaty, and to play its role in ensuring the Kashmiri people are granted their rightful freedom.
