Convict in Sara Inam murder case challenges death sentence

Lawyer files application in Islamabad High Court saying trial court verdict was illegal and be set aside.

ISLAMABAD: The convict in the Sara Inam murder case has challenged his death sentence handed down by a local court a few days ago.

The district and sessions court in Islamabad on Thursday last sentenced Shahnawaz Amir to death with a fine of Rs1 million in the murder case of his ex-wife Sara Inam. The court acquitted Samina Shah, the mother of the convict, for lack of evidence.

However, the convict challenged the verdict in Islamabad High Court through his lawyer Nisar Asghar.

The application stated that the trial court sentenced Shahnawaz to death and acquitted his mother, the co-accused, in the case. It said the trial court banked on convicted statements and announced the ruling without any solid evidence.

The IHC was urged to declare null and void the verdict of the trial court and acquit Shahnawaz.

It may be mentioned here that Sara Inam, a Canadian citizen, was murdered by Shahnawaz at his house in Islamabad on September 23, 2022.

Shahnawaz, son of politician abd TV commentator Ayaz Amir, was arrested in the case the following day.
