DUBAI: United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres told world leaders at COP28 that burning of fossil fuels must be stopped outright and a reduction or abatement in their use would not be enough to stop global warming.
“We cannot save a burning planet with a fire hose of fossil fuels, he told the gathering.
The conference got underway at Expo City Dubai with 52,000 party delegates and 90,000 non-party delegates in attendance.
A delegation led by caretaker prime minister of Pakistan Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar is attending the moot. On this occasion, he held talks with various world leaders including British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Fredrickson. The caretaker prime minister also held informal conversation with British King Charles III and the UN secretary general.
After a year of record temperatures, the pressure is on for this year’s summit to accelerate action to limit climate change. Countries, however, are divided over the future of fossil fuel – the burning of which is the main cause of climate change.
Host nation, the United Arab Emirates, is a major oil producer and member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and is seeking to include the fossil fuel industry in the climate debate.
