Country becoming battlefield for proxy wars: Fazal

JUI chief says state writ loosening in Khyber Pakthunkhwa and Balochistan, parliament should play its role.

ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulama-i-Islam chief Maulana Fazal Rahman on Wednesday said that the country was becoming a battlefield for proxy wars.

Speaking at the National Assembly, he said that writ of the state was losing in Khyber Pakthunkhwa and Balochistan where armed groups were roaming on highways and killing people.

He said you are running government, have Army and troops armed with weapons guard cities and security check posts across the country, but in one single day terrorists appear and attack the army, the police, the transport vehicles and kill people and then disappear.

But more unfortunate is the fact that Parliament is not taking the issue seriously and has failed to play its due role. The JUI chief added that political leaders were being sidelined and the role of politics in the country was diminishing. This is very alarming for democracy and stability of the country, he warned.

He was opinion that considering political leaders irrelevant and unnecessary was the height of stupidity. Today, robbers and Kutchay kay Dakoo ruling the roost in Sindh and challenging the writ of the state. In such a situation, what should be our role, what should be the role of parliament, he asked.

He said that when everything fails to control a law and order order or other issue, the politicians come and fill the vacuum. He said that before the elections he went to Afghanistan and held successful talks with the Taliban government on security issues between the two countries.
