NEW YORK: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar raised Pakistan’s serious concerns over the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and violations of the Indus Waters Treaty during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York.
Dar stressed the need for a just resolution of the Kashmir issue in line with UN Security Council resolutions and called for stronger UN engagement on regional peace, including addressing externally sponsored terrorism and water treaty violations.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism, Dar highlighted the country’s initiatives as President of the UN Security Council, including a high-level debate on multilateralism and a meeting on UN-OIC cooperation. He emphasized the importance of diplomacy and dialogue in global conflict resolution.
Secretary-General Guterres praised Pakistan’s constructive role and principled positions at the UN, commending its contributions to peace and development.
Dar reiterated Pakistan’s firm support for Palestinian statehood, an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and opposition to Israeli annexation plans. Both leaders discussed the upcoming high-level conference on Palestine and stressed the need for meaningful outcomes.
The Deputy Prime Minister welcomed the Secretary-General’s efforts to ease Pakistan-India tensions and expressed strong backing for the “UN80” initiative aimed at revitalizing the UN’s core pillars.
He also briefed Guterres on Pakistan’s efforts to boost regional connectivity and economic growth.
