Days of unnecessary adjournments over, CJP warns lawyers

Reprimand lawyer and imposes a fine of Rs5,000 on him for wasting court's time.

ISLAMABAD: With the Supreme Court facing backlog of thousands of cases, the new Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa has announced that the habit of delaying cases by seeking unnecessary adjournments would not be tolerated at any cost.

The CJP passed the warning during hearing of a case by a three-member bench when one of the lawyers sought to adjourn the hearing for a later date.

The CJP reprimanded the lawyer and also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him for wasting the time of court. The chief justice said through this case, the message was meant for everyone that there would be no delay in cases.

He said Supreme Court has lot of pending cases and in any case a notice will be issued to parties on a single hearing and a decision will be taken on arguments in the next hearing.

It may be noted that some lawyers in lower as well as higher judiciary are habitual of taking new dates on different pretexts and delay dispensation of justice. Such lawyers also make different excuses and remain absent from the hearing of cases forcing the courts to postpone hearing.

Last week, the chief justice of Pakistan formed a committee of judges on case management that will also determine the fate of complaints against judges, pending before the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC). There is a backlog of 57,000 cases pending before the top court, the court record showed.
