Devastating Floods Sweep Through Punjab, Millions Displaced

Many affected communities still lack food, clean water, and medical care.

LAHORE: Severe flooding continues to ravage Punjab. It is the worst deluge in decades for which authorities blame India for releasing water in the rivers.

Torrential monsoon rains, combined with sudden water releases from Indian dams on the Sutlej, Chenab, and Ravi rivers, have submerged over 1,400 villages. More than 1.2 million people have been forced from their homes.

Authorities have evacuated nearly 300,000 residents. Over 1,100 relief and medical camps have been set up. Many affected communities still lack food, clean water, and medical care.

Key infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and grain crops, has been heavily damaged. Floods have sparked outbreaks of waterborne diseases. Moreover, scores of people have also lost their lives in different villages.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz visited the worst-hit areas, assessing the situation and meeting with displaced residents. She promised additional relief and urged authorities to speed up rescue operations.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued alerts for continued heavy rainfall. State and disaster response teams are actively conducting rescue and relief operations.

The Chief Minister has also formed a high-level committee to oversee flood management and mitigation efforts.
