The discovery of lightning, or at least these tiny electrical discharges, on Mars is a major step forward in understanding the planet’s weather systems and environment.
It’s amazing that Perseverance’s microphone, which was primarily intended for scientific communication and recording sounds like the rover’s movements, ended up capturing these electrical “zaps.” It’s an unexpected but valuable insight into the Martian atmosphere.
These small discharges might not be like the violent thunderstorms we have here on Earth, but they still suggest a very active and dynamic Martian climate.
The way dust storms on Mars can generate electrical energy with much less charge buildup than on Earth is intriguing. The low pressure and different atmospheric composition seem to create conditions where dust-induced discharges are more common.
