LAHORE: Punjab’s rivers are facing catastrophic floods, with water levels rising dangerously and thousands displaced.
At Head Panjnad, the River Chenab has crossed 609,000 cusecs, breaching embankments in Jallo Pirwala where over 50 villages lie underwater. Authorities have declared an emergency in the region.
Rescue teams worked through the night in Jallo Pirwala under the direct supervision of Punjab’s Chief Minister. 143 people were rescued overnight, and within the past 24 hours, 2,343 were evacuated from Multan.
So far, more than 10,800 residents have been rescued from Multan’s flood-hit areas. District authorities confirm the evacuation of 350,000 people and 300,000 animals, while province-wide operations have shifted nearly 2 million people and 1.5 million livestock to safety.
Floodwaters have wreaked havoc in Muzaffargarh’s Ali Pur tehsil, drowning entire villages. In Khairpur Tamewali, the River Sutlej breached dykes at Fazlu Kokara, while in Rahim Yar Khan and Liaquatpur, thousands of acres of crops have been destroyed, intensifying the crisis.
Officials warn a major flood wave will soon pass through Kot Mithan in Rajanpur. At Head Trimmu, flow has reached 543,000 cusecs, while Head Sulemanki, Head Balloki, and Sadhnai also face high floods.
Head Muhammadwala is reporting 400,000 cusecs, and authorities expect the surge from Trimmu to reach Multan later today. The PDMA has cautioned that Multan will endure flooding for the next three days.
The Indus River at Kotri Barrage is also under stress, with current inflow at 236,116 cusecs and outflow at 231,763 cusecs. In the last 24 hours, inflow has dropped by 8,167 cusecs, yet low-level flooding continues, keeping officials on alert.
