Earth-Like Planet Discovered

WASHINGTON: Scientists have identified an exoplanet that may possess Earth-like environmental conditions and significant amounts of water, raising new hopes in the search for potentially habitable worlds beyond the solar system.

The planet, known as LHS 1140 b, is located about 39 light-years from Earth and orbits a red dwarf star smaller than the Sun.

Researchers say observations suggest the planet could have an atmosphere, moderate temperatures and abundant water—key ingredients considered important for supporting life.

According to scientists from Harvard University, LHS 1140 b may contain even more water than Earth. While no evidence of life has been found, researchers believe the planet is among the most promising candidates for future studies on habitability.

The exoplanet is approximately 5.5 times more massive than Earth and lies within the habitable zone of its host star, where temperatures may allow liquid water to exist under suitable atmospheric conditions.

Astronomers say the discovery marks another significant step in the ongoing search for Earth-like planets and could help scientists better understand whether life exists elsewhere in the universe.
