ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has achieved a significant economic milestone in the CASA-1000 project, securing savings of over $27 million.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Energy (Power Division), high-level negotiations held in Sweden resulted in a reduction of the contractor’s estimated costs for the project. This led to substantial financial savings for Pakistan.
Previously, the “care and custody” cost for Pakistan was estimated at $32.9 million. However, it has now been reduced to $9 million, which will be shared between Pakistan and Tajikistan—resulting in considerable savings for Pakistan.
The statement also emphasized that Pakistan effectively safeguarded its national interests during the negotiations.
The CASA-1000 project, which had faced delays due to the situation in Afghanistan, has now been given a revised timeline. According to officials, the HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) system is expected to be completed by September 2027.
Authorities have also agreed to ensure interim protection and operational continuity of key installations, with an extension planned until February 2028.
