ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified Abdul Latif Chitrali, a Member of the National Assembly from Chitral, after his conviction in connection with the May 9, 2023, riots.
An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad sentenced Chitrali to 27 years in prison for his involvement in the attack on the Ramna Police Station during the violent protests that erupted following the arrest of PTI leader Imran Khan.
The ECP’s decision, issued on July 29, 2025, declared Chitrali’s seat vacant under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution, which mandates disqualification for any legislator sentenced to more than two years in prison. The ruling also applies to other PTI lawmakers convicted in similar cases, including Senator Ejaz Chaudhry and MNA Muhammad Ahmad Chattha, both of whom received 10-year sentences.
The ECP’s disqualification of Abdul Latif Chitrali underscores the legal consequences of involvement in acts of terrorism and the commitment to uphold the rule of law in Pakistan’s political landscape.
