Holding of elections on February 8 finalized

Letter had earlier mentioned January 28, February 4 and February 11 as proposed dates for holding the polls.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Thursday evening proposed to President Ari Alvi three dates for holding the general elections in the country. Later, the ECP and President Alvi agreed on February 8 as the date for the elections.

Sources said Chief Election Commissioner Sikendar Sultan Raja met President Ali at Awan-e-Sadr and gave him the proposed dates dates of January 28, February 4 and February 11 on the direction of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. However, they failed to agree on a final date.

Later, the CEC sent a letter from his office to the president, with a suggestion that February 11 would be the most suitable date.

Earlier in the day, Sajil Swati, the counsel for Election Commission of Pakistan, during the hearing of a petition told the Supreme Court that the commission was ready to hold the polls on February 11, 2024. He said the process of delimitations will be completed by November 30.

Chief justice of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa asked the counsel if the commission had taken the president of Pakistan on board. He directed the ECP lawyer to consult the president on the election date before a final announcement.
